Infographic: The History of the Hoodie

As everyone who knows me knows, I adore hoodies. I find them one of the most functional garments around; accordingly, I own several.

I wish only that they came in more flavors: Why don’t we have more formal-wear hoodies, more fine-fabric hoodies, more hooded cloaks and capes?

After musing over the symbolism of the hoodie (which came after drafting a paean to the hoodie), I started to think about the garment’s history. Hoodies have covered humans for as long as history has covered humans. Could I piece together a hoodie narrative?

In the broadest strokes, I’ve managed a history of the hoodie infographic for quick visual reference:

With the broad strokes in review, I found myself amazed anew at the breadth of history and symbolism wrapped up in one enrobing garment. Highs, lows, and neutrals—they all grace the hoodie’s history.
